Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to the spring 2014 edition of The Courier. I know we’re all looking forward to the warmer weather and a clear path for summer! While we transition from our boots and gloves to (hopefully) our light jackets and even shorts, your SLA Toronto board has been working hard on fantastic programs and activities.

The 2014 SLA Conference is also here! Starting June 8th and ending on June 10th, and taking place in Vancouver, BC, it is shaping up to be avaluable few days. Are you going to the annual conference? Make sure to connect with SLA Toronto members that are attending, and be sure to get a ticket for the 2014 Canadian Reception, hosted by CEDROM. Check your conference planner and schedule for all the logistical details.

I am honoured to tell you that SLA Toronto will again be sending a very deserving student to attend conference. This year, Catherine MacGregor was selected to receive a $1,500 grant to attend the SLA Annual Conference in Vancouver, provided by SLA Toronto. Catherine is a Master of Information candidate from the iSchool at the University of Toronto, and was also a co-chair of the iSchool SLA student group. If you’re heading to Vancouver, please keep an eye out for Catherine and be sure to say hello.

The SLA Toronto Post-Conference Dinner is the perfect way to reconnect with your friends and colleagues after the conference, and is a great way to learn about what happened at conference if you can’t attend yourself. The event will take place on the evening of June 24th, and all the details you need will be posted to the SLA Toronto website. I hope to see you there!

SLA Toronto Executive and Advisory Board Role Updates

In early 2014, Melanie Browne stepped down from her role as SLA Toronto’s Treasurer, and was replaced by Stacey Piesner. Stacey has been doing a fantastic job as treasurer and we couldn’t be happier with her immense contributions in such a short time. Early 2014 also saw the changing of our Webmaster when Terri Zimmer stepped down after many years at the helm. SLA Toronto past-president and SLA Fellow Daniel Lee has taken over the role, and has been doing a great job caring for our website. Thank you to our former board members for their time over the past few years, and of course, to both Stacey and Daniel for your dedication to SLA Toronto!

One other board update is to say a huge thank you to Emmeline Hobbs as she steps off the SLA Toronto Executive Board and into motherhood! Emmeline will be going on maternity leave in June and we will miss her dearly, but we’re also so excited for her wonderful (and extremely hip) little baby. Kejo Buchanan will be stepping into the Programming Director role alongside Patricia Aspinwall, to continue providing high-quality events all year long.

SLA Toronto’s 75th Anniversary

2015 marks SLA Toronto’s 75th year – can you believe we’re that young? Our President-Elect, Bernadette Roca, is heading up a committee to plan for celebrations in 2015 to show off how fabulous we’ve been in 75 years’ time. If you’d like to volunteer and get involved in the planning, or if you just have a good idea to share for the celebrations, please get in touch with Bernadette.

See you in Vancouver!

—Erin McDonald
